Slow observations from a small orchard in the Ardennes.
Alderbrook is roughly two and a half hectares of old standard orchard and rough pasture, bought in 2018 in a state best described as neglected but not yet lost. There are forty-three surviving fruit trees, most of them older than anyone locally can account for.
Memory is generous and inaccurate. We started the notes because we could not agree, one February, on whether the previous summer had been dry. The record settles arguments and occasionally teaches us something.
